Software for Orthodox parishes: a guide

What an Orthodox parish needs from church software, the kinds of tools parishes use, and how the products they ask about compare, taken from each product's own website.

What an Orthodox parish needs

Most church software is written for any church. An Orthodox parish has needs of its own, and they decide whether a tool helps or gets in the way.

  • The parish's own calendar New (Revised Julian) Calendar or Old Calendar, with fixed feasts thirteen days apart, and Pascha on the Orthodox date. Feasts, fasts, the saints of the day and the daily readings should follow the calendar the parish keeps.
  • Commemorations Names of the living and the departed, sent in for the Liturgy or a memorial service, arriving where the clergy will see them.
  • Sacraments and services Baptisms, weddings, confession, memorial services, house blessings and molebens, asked for at times the clergy can actually keep.
  • More than one language Parishes serve families who read Russian, Greek, Serbian, Romanian, Arabic, Georgian or Ukrainian as well as English, often in the same church.
  • The candle desk and the hall Candles, prosphora, icons and books; the feast dinner and the pilgrimage, with seats and tickets.
  • The office and the diocese Records, stewardship and the books, and reports a diocese can read.

The three kinds of tools

Parish databases and accounting systems keep the office's records and books: families, sacramental registers, stewardship, the ledger. They are where the treasurer works.

General church management platforms are built for churches of every kind: a people database, giving, events and groups, often with an app. They are broad, and they are not written around the Orthodox calendar.

Orthodox parish websites and apps are what parishioners actually open: the schedule on the right calendar, the day's saints and readings, requests, giving and news. Many parishes keep an accounting package and use one of these for everything parishioners see.

Where YourParish fits

YourParish is the third kind of tool, written for Orthodox parishes from the start. Parishioners get a free iPhone and Android app; the parish gets one admin page, a website on its own domain and notifications to every phone.

Each parish keeps its own calendar: New Calendar, or Old Calendar in Russian or Greek practice, and the day's feast, saints, fast and readings follow it. Parishioners ask for sacraments and services at times from the clergy's calendar, send names for commemoration, buy candles and prosphora, reserve seats at the feast dinner and give, in 14 languages.

It does not keep the parish's books. Parishes that need a ledger keep their accounting package and run everything parishioners see on YourParish. The membership is US$100 a month with no setup fee and no minimum term, and the parish is entered and set up for the priest.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Does it follow our calendar? Ask to see the Old Calendar, or the New, with this week's feasts, fasts and readings, not a calendar you type in yourself.
  • What do parishioners actually open? A native app, a web portal or a website, and whether it is free to them.
  • Which languages, for whom? The interface parishioners read, and the language the parish writes in, are two different questions.
  • Where does the money go? Whose merchant account takes the gift, and what the card fees are.
  • Who enters the parish? Whether you are handed a blank admin, or the schedule, clergy and services are entered for you.
  • What does the whole thing cost? Add every module you need: the app, the website, giving and the store, not just the cheapest line.
